Welcome back!  We hope the children are now all fully recharged and ready to enter their final year of Ysgol y Waun!  Year 6 is a very important as it prepares them for their next stage, moving up to high school.

As always we will have high expectations of your child and although they will receive lots of support we do expect them to take ownership of their own learning both in school and at home.  We expect all homework to be completed and children to read every night.  We would appreciate it if you can support your child with their home learning every step of the way.

Wellbeing – The wellbeing of your child has always been of our upmost importance and due to the crazy year 2020 has bought to us this is even more important.  We will be working on building positive relationships and positive minds.  Growth mind set and building your child to believe and truly realise that they can Dream Big, work hard and the world is their Oyster.

Homework  – They will have a topic based sheet to complete over this term where the children can interpret the activities in their own way and this can be completed when they feel inspired and will need to be completed by the end of the term.  Some weeks the children will receive Maths and Literacy homework.  This relates to the learning taken place during the week and it is really important that the children complete this so they are consolidating their learning. All work will be set online and will need to be completed on Seesaw or pictures taken and put on Seesaw.  Due to the current circumstances nothing, unfortunately, can be bought into school.

Reading and Spellings - Please, try and read with your child for at least 30 minutes a night and encourage them to book blog once they have read.  Even good readers still benefit from reading out loud to an adult. This really benefits their pace, comprehension and therefore understanding of the story.  Reading is a true gift.

Spellings are given once a week and also need to be practised on a daily basis so they can be remembered for longer than a day!

Children are encouraged to log into TT Rockstars regularly, they do have access to this at school but the more time reinforcing mathematical concepts the better.

Our P.E. session is Wednesday and Thursday  and currently children wear their  full P.E. kit into school on that day -white t-shirt, Trackies/leggings/shorts and trainers.

Our topic is Explorers and we will be looking at different to explore and explorers of the past.  Any additional research around this topic would be greatly received. If you and your child go exploring don’t forget to post them on Seesaw, I would love to see them.

We are very aware that many 10 and 11 year olds now have access to online games and social media.  Although this can sometimes be used to support your child’s learning it does need close parental monitoring.  Furthermore we are aware that some children find it very difficult to concentrate in class due to tiredness from being on a digital device late at night.  We would appreciate your support in monitoring this. If you need any further advice on this please log onto the NSPCC and National Online Safety website.

Thank you for all your continued support, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to come in and speak to one of us or use Seesaw to discuss any issues that might arise.
